the problems with the “fediverse” vision cannot really be solved with technology, as they are social problems. different people with different visions (technical, moderation, even posting style and intended use cases really) are not entirely universally compatible.

increasingly, i find myself thinking that the real solution to the problem the “fediverse” tries to solve is to make the web quirky again. instead of “apps” where we share our thoughts, we should have websites again.

anyway i don’t know, i’ve been here a long time. since the StatusNet days.

i think “federated microblogging” is a boring problem to solve anymore.

the things in this world which are actually interesting problems to solve are elsewhere. to me, fedi is a communications tool, for a specific style of asynchronous communication. with lemmy, maybe a second style of asynchronous communication. but that’s all it is.

the more interesting thing to me is real-time communication at this point. that is a space where it is basically 100% proprietary for tools that people use and care about.

if the people rallying on fedi (which has plateaued, bluntly) made the effort to push for more innovation in emergent communications tools, it would be time better spent in my opinion.
